Winter Storm Warning for Saturday

A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for a significant snow storm that is expected to drop up to eight inches of snow on central Maryland between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 22).

University officials are monitoring the progress of the storm and have instituted measures to ensure that planned events this weekend should be able to take place as scheduled.

Grounds crews will be working 12-hour shifts starting at 6 a.m. Saturday. They will concentrate their efforts in the areas where events are scheduled, including Susquehanna Hall for the PCAT tests that begin there at 8 a.m. Subsequent events are scheduled in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Tawes Hall and in Comcast Center.

If the weather causes any changes to the schedules for these events, information will be posted on our Web site, www.umd.edu, with links to the Web sites and information phone lines for event sponsors.

In addition, students will begin moving back into residence halls for spring semester this weekend, and resident life staff will be on hand 24 hours a day to help, regardless of the status of the university. Students planning to move back this weekend may prefer to wait until Sunday, after the storm has passed through the area and travel will be safer and easier.
