Security at the University of Maryland

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and guests has always been one of the highest priorities of the University of Maryland. Our police are among the best trained and equipped in the state, and we are in constant contact with our counterparts in nearby jurisdictions. We engage in joint training exercises from time to time, and we mobilize as needed in response to security issues in the region. In recent years, this has been particularly valuable as the nation has increased its security level.

From time to time, for a variety of reasons, the university will increase its security level. In most cases, we will not be able to discuss the specific reasons for increased security, as this may compromise the effectiveness of security measures. Additionally, these increased security measures will be implemented in a random and unannounced manner, as the deterrent effect of these exercises is dependent upon their unpredictable application.

The campus community should understand that an increased police presence or other visible measures simply mean we are on the job protecting the community. We encourage all members of the university community to be familiar with the university's threat warning procedures and know how to react in the event of an actual emergency.
