Maryland Student Being Treated for TB

The Prince George's County Health Department has notified the University Health Center that a University of Maryland, College Park, student is being treated for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

At the recommendation of the Health Department, we have contacted classmates and instructors who may have been exposed and suggested that they be tested for TB. For this group, the risk of contracting TB in this situation is low. If you have not been notified by the University or the Health Department, your risk of contracting TB in this situation is minimal.

Generally, a person must have prolonged, close exposure to another person who has active TB in order to get the disease. TB germs can be spread through the air and become airborne when a person with TB coughs. People with frequent or prolonged contact with the individual may breathe in these germs and become infected. Not everyone exposed to TB will become infected.

For more information on TB, see the Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/tb/faqs/qa.htm.

Testing for classmates and instructors who may have been exposed is available at the University Health Center, Prince George's County Health Department Cheverly Tuberculosis Clinic or at your private physician.

Please call 301.314.8120 for testing information or to make an appointment at the Health Center. Testing will be available at the Health Center on a walk-in basis from 9:00 a.m.—7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 12 and 13, and Monday, May 16.

You may call the Health Department's Cheverly TB Clinic at 301.583.3110 for more information or to schedule an appointment for testing, Monday—Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
