Professor Named to Maryland Top 100 Women List for 2009

Georgia Sorenson
The University of Maryland's Georgia Sorenson, a research professor at the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, which she founded, at the School of Public Policy, has been named to The Daily Record's Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2009. Sorenson was selected from several hundred applications for her personal success and contributions to bettering the communities around her. The Daily Record created Maryland's Top 100 Women 13 years ago to draw attention to the contributions being made by women throughout our state.

Sorenson is the founder of the Burns Academy at University of Maryland, which maintains a mission to foster leadership scholarship and education, with particular attention paid to groups historically underrepresented in public leadership.

An architect of the leadership studies field, Sorenson is co-editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Leadership. She serves on the editorial board of numerous journals including Leadership (US Editor), Leadership Quarterly (Associate Editor) and Leadership Review. Her most recent book, Strategic Leadership: A General's Art, on military leadership, came out in early 2009.

Before joining academia, Sorenson was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Carter White House and served on the President's Productivity Council. Sorenson, a longtime Washingtonian, is a frequent commentator on leadership and presidential politics in the popular media.
