University Relations Earns Eight National Awards

University Relations staff racked up an impressive eight awards in the national annual competition sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support for Education (CASE). The Circle of Excellence medals are awarded for high-quality communications work in higher education and exemplify best practices nationally and internationally.

To date, the University has received notification of two silver medals, five golds, and a grand gold medal. Entries in photography, magazines, news writing, Internet communications, design and advertising are among the winners. Marketing and communications staff share credit for several of the awards with colleagues in Alumni Relations and Undergraduate Studies as well as two freelancers.

"The list of Maryland awards and winners is impressive for the achievements across the communications spectrum, as well as the level of awards," said Brodie Remington, Vice President for University Relations. "We are obviously very proud."

"We have some of the most talented communication professionals in the country working for us here at Maryland," said Terry Flannery, executive director, university marketing and communications. "They deserve this recognition. The grand gold medal for the Fear the Turtle program is particularly satisfying because it involved so many of our staff and because a grand gold medal is awarded infrequently--only in the case of truly stellar work."

A regional spring competition among schools in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic foreshadowed awards to come at the national level. In the CASE Region II competition, the University of Maryland won ten medals--five of them gold--tying Maryland for first with the University of Pittsburgh for most awards.

Award notifications at the level of bronze, silver, gold and grand gold continue to be made in 40 categories through the end of May, and all national winners are presented at a national conference in July.
