Sorenson is the founder of the Burns Academy at University of Maryland, which maintains a mission to foster leadership scholarship and education, with particular attention paid to groups historically underrepresented in public leadership.
An architect of the leadership studies field, Sorenson is co-editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Leadership/strong>. She serves on the editorial board of numerous journals including Leadership (US Editor), Leadership Quarterly (Associate Editor) and Leadership Review. Her most recent book, Strategic Leadership, A General's Art on military leadership, came out in early 2009.
Before joining academia, Sorenson was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Carter White House and served on the President's Productivity Council. Sorenson, a longtime Washingtonian, is a frequent commentator on leadership and presidential politics in the popular media.
