Duncan Resigns Position at Maryland
College Park, MDUniversity of Maryland President C. D. (Dan) Mote, Jr. today accepted the resignation of Douglas M. Duncan, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, effective November 7, 2008.
As vice president, Duncan served as the university's chief administrative and finance officer. He oversaw seven departments, including university human resources, comptroller, public safety, facilities management, environmental safety, business services and procurement and supply.
The resignation ends a 17-month tenure that also saw Duncan effectively navigate county and city relationships on behalf of the university and lead the redevelopment of the university's East Campus, an initiative designed to attract high-quality mixed-used development to the Route 1 corridor, increase housing for graduate students, promote connections and partnerships with the City of College Park, and provide a dramatically enhanced campus setting to support its mission to attract the best students and exceptional faculty and staff to the university.
When completed, East Campus will be the single largest private development opportunity on the Route 1 corridor and one of the best university town centers in the nation. The public-private collaboration will promote regional economic development, provide thousands of new jobs, and attract new employers and customers from the surrounding metropolitan Washington area.
"We will miss Doug's ability to navigate the complexities of local, county and state development issues," said Mote. "His command of the issues, and his leadership in moving our development projects forward, and his ability to engage our communities will not be easily replaced. But, we wish him the very best with his future opportunities."
Prior to his arrival at the university, Duncan served an unprecedented third term as Montgomery County Executive, the top elected official of Maryland's largest jurisdiction. As the chief elected official, he developed, coordinated and implemented a wide array of initiatives on the local, regional and state levels in partnership with a broad cross section of governmental, academic, business, labor and community representatives.
