First Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems Awarded to UM Professor

Forni
UM mathematics professor Giovanni Forni was awarded the first ever Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems for his outstanding work in the theory of dynamical systems and related areas. The award recognizes mathematicians who have made a substantial impact in the field at an early stage in their careers. Forni was presented with the award at the semi-annual Workshop in Dynamical Systems, held at the University of Maryland in March.

The $15,000 prize was endowed by UM professor Michael Brin, an internationally renowned mathematics scholar of dynamical systems, a multidisciplinary field that examines order in chaos, as in mechanical and electrical systems. In addition to the Prize for Dynamical Systems, Brin has also endowed a Chair in Mathematics, Graduate Student Fellowship, and Postdoctoral Fellowship in UM's College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

"I am delighted and proud that the first prize was awarded to a University of Maryland colleague, Giovanni Forni," said Brin.

Nominations for this prize and awards are made biennially by an international committee of experts in the field.
