Cast a Vote for Linda Clement in the National Volvo for Life Competition!
We need your vote. Vice
President of Student Affairs Linda Clement has been named a semifinalist
in the Volvo
for Life Awards environment category. Dr. Clement was chosen from thousands
of nominations from across the U.S. because of her continued efforts to develop
and execute environmental campaigns on campus that have changed campus culture
and led to significant changes in practice.
Finalists will receive $25,000 for the charity of their choicewith the
grand prize winner in each category receiving a $100,000 award. Dr. Clement has
chosen the University of Maryland Division of Student Affairs sustainability
initiatives as her recipient organization.
Online voting will determine the three finalists in each category. Votes can be cast at www.volvoforlifeawards.com until January 7, 2008. There is no limit to the number of times a person can votebut automated or programmed voting is not allowed. Dr. Clement's work with environmental issues at the University of Maryland has
included rallying various campus interests, educating students, and researching
eco-friendly solutions. She has worked relentlessly to lobby for changeresulting
in the entire campus community adopting more environmentally-friendly daily practices,
including:
- University increased recycling from 37,000 pounds to 56,000 pounds per week.
- Dining Services donates 800 gallons of waste oil per month to be recycled into biodiesel fuel.
- Maintenance converts 9,000 pounds of waste per week to compost; recycled up to 15 tons of post football game refuse.
- Recreation Services installed water-saving irrigation and utilized reduced-energy
lighting.
- University golf course planted hardier grasses to reduce irrigation.
- Residence Life initiated the EcoHouse, an environmentally friendly living hall.
