About Us

Values

  • We commit to justice, equality, and respect for all persons in all of our endeavors.
  • We value equally people of all sexual orientations and gender identities or expressions and honor whatever label they may choose to self-identify.
  • We value equally those who question their sexual or gender identity.
  • We seek a better sense of community among LGBT students, staff, faculty and alumni, and a more secure sense of their belonging to the campus community.
  • We serve every member of the student body, and all staff and faculty.
  • We believe that by graduation all students should possess a base of authoritative knowledge pertaining to sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
  • We support heterosexual allies and seek their development.
  • We aspire to become a model for other universities, especially those within the University System of Maryland and our official peer institutions.

Actions

  • We connect the needs of LGBT students, staff, and faculty with on- and off-campus resources.
  • We assist service providers within the university as they address the needs of LGBT people.
  • We provide unique support services specific to LGBT students.
  • We disseminate authoritative information about LGBT people and assist the institution in providing opportunities for students to learn about this population.
  • We collaborate with campus citizens to improve the climate for all people with marginalized identities.

Annual Events

  • LGBT Fall Kickoff Reception, the Monday after Labor Day - Event designed to bring LGBT people together, especially new students, with representatives of selected resource providing units
  • National Coming Out Day, October 11 - Support and coordination of the annual Out List and Ally List, published in mid-October in The Diamondback
  • Holiday Fund-raisers - Various activities in late November and early December to raise funds for the LGBT Scholarship Fund
  • Pride Days - Promotion of activities focused on LGBT people during the weeks immediately following Spring Break
  • Lavender Graduation - Spring community celebration for LGBT and allied graduates
  • LGBT Community Pride Events - University presence at various spring celebrations including DC Black Lesbian and Gay Pride, one of the largest African-American LGBT events in the United States, and Capital Pride, the major Metro DC LGBT spring festival
