3. MAPP Lecture: Ingrid Gould Ellen, The Future of U.S. Housing Policy | Monday, April 27 at 7pm

When: Monday, April 27, 2015 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Where: Architecture : Auditorium 0204
Event Type(s): Lecture

The Urban Studies and Planning program is hosting "The Future of U.S. Housing Policy," a presentation and discussion by Ingrid Gould Ellen, Professor and Director of the Urban Planning Program at NYU Wagner, and Faculty Director of the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy.

In recent decades in the U.S., incomes have stagnated for most people but rents have risen. Nearly a third of renters around the country are now paying more than half of their income for housing. Dr. Gould's talk will explore the following questions about the billions of dollars that federal, state and local governments spend to support means-tested housing programs. What does the federal government spend on; why, and what does it accomplish? What, in general, should governments' roles in housing be? Do these answers differ at the local level versus federal level? Are there steps city governments can take to enhance the affordability of housing that would not require substantial direct outlays?"

As scholars and activists, we must think consciously about our roles to help build a sustainable academic discourse and determine specific action steps that university communities as well as policy makers can take to curtail criminalization and pursue social equality.
