3. DIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK: Create Opportunities for All to Participate

Event Type(s): Other,Diversity

Though some uneven participation in a meeting is certainly due to personality, research suggests that membership in certain subordinated social identity groups can also hinder participation. Some groups are given the subtle message that their input is more welcome than others and vice versa. To counter this dynamic, notice which people from which social identity groups tend to participate more, develop a clear and realistic agenda, discuss and decide on ground rules for the meeting, structure time in the agenda for the exploration of differing viewpoints, and avoid filling the occasional silence (which can encourage hesitant participants to speak more). If over-participators continue to dominate discussion, intentionally ask to hear from other people. Over time, this conveys a general sense of inclusion.
