16. 2015-2016 First Year Book

Where: Marie Mount : 2110
Event Type(s): Other

Faculty and New students may pick up a copy of "Head off & Split," the 2015-2016 first year book by Nikky Finney. The winner of the 2011 National Book Award, Finney is described as one of the most eloquent, urgent, and fearless poets writing in America today. Her poetry takes us from the bus seat of Rosa Parks, into the mind of President, onto the roof where a family has been stranded by Hurricane Katrina and to the personal journey of the poet herself. The book challenges us to look deeply at how we think about race and identity, and the way the past and present is told.

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center has commissioned a poem by Ms. Finney. "The Battle of and for the Black Face boy" will be released this fall. The poem and the book delve deep into our history and bring us to the important issues of today.

Stay tuned for announcements about Ms. Finney's visits to the campus during 2015-2016.
