2. DIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK: Hi, I am'

Event Type(s): Other,Diversity

Someone once asked me my name. "Beth," I said. "Death?" they responded. I laughed, corrected them, and moved on. This is rare for me-in our context, my name is familiar. As we begin a new semester, we will meet lots of new people. I've come to realize how important it is to refer to people in the way that they want, by pronouncing their name correctly and using the correct pronouns. I often ask gently if they wouldn't mind writing their name out phonetically. I also now make it a habit to ask people about their gender pronouns, i.e. how to refer to them when they are not in the room. I used to be worried this was awkward, and honestly it can be, but the more I do it, the less it is, and it also means that we can build a relationship built on respect.
