2. DIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK: Celebrate Inclusively

Event Type(s): Other,Diversity

Holidays are lovely, but a bit complicated in a diverse community. Some celebrate Thanksgiving; some don't. Some look forward to Christmas; others to Hanukkah (Dec. 16-24); some to Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan.1); others to the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21). Some don't celebrate any holidays, either because of their religious beliefs or because they're not religious. So it's important not to assume that "Merry Christmas!" is a welcomed greeting. It's better to offer "Season's Greetings" unless you know what the person believes. And think twice about how you decorate, especially in public spaces. Displaying symbols of Hanukkah (Jewish Festival of Lights) and Kwanzaa (African American Harvest Festival) along with Christmas decorations conveys a message of greater inclusion.
