1. Mandarin Speakers NEEDED!

Are you a native speaker of Mandarin who have learned English as a second language and are fluent in daily communication using English? If so, you could earn $10 by participating in a study in the University of Maryland Department of Psychology. We are investigating the cognitive mechanisms involved in switching between languages.
To participate in this study, you must:
- be at least 18 years old ,
-- be a native speaker of Mandarin,
-- have learned English as your second language, and
-- be fluent in daily communication using English .
Participation in this study will involve a one-hour session, scheduled at your convenience. You will be compensated $10 for your time. Interested?

2. UMD Summer Chorus

The UMD Summer Chorus is a campus and community chorus available to anyone who wants to sing. This year, Cindy Bauchspies (DMA '15) and Allan Laino (DMA '15) will lead a performance of Mozart's Vespers and Vivaldi's Gloria at 8pm on July 25 in The Clarice.

A membership fee of $50 for faculty/staff or $40 for students will be applied to every participant to offset the cost of scores, orchestral players, and administrators.

**Early Bird Special -- All participants who register by May 4 will receive a $5 discount!**

Smoking Cessation Research Study

Are you a current smoker and ready to quit? Are you looking for a discreet method to manage your nicotine cravings?
If you are motivated to quit smoking, you may be eligible for a research study evaluating an investigational nicotine replacement therapy being conducted in the School of Public Health!

Qualified participants must:
Be between 18 and 85 years of age,
Smoke cigarettes on a daily basis,
Be motivated to quit smoking, and
Meet additional study criteria.

Participants will receive study product and study-related care at no cost. Health insurance is not needed.

Subjects will be compensated for their time and travel.

7. Hi-LAB Study- Participants wanted!

Where: Patapsco Building : 1110

This study is meant to assess whether cognitive and perceptual tasks related to predicting foreign language acquisition reliably measure this ability over time. Participants will be able to earn up to $75 through the completion of two sessions ($15 for 1st, and $60 for 2nd); the first session time frame is 04/20/2015 -- 05/01/2015, and the second session will occur from 05/18/2015-05/29/2015. Sessions may vary in terms of time commitment and compensation.

Must be at least 18 years of age, and a native speaker of English. The study will take place in the Patapsco Building (5201 Paint Branch Parkway), which is a short walk from the College Park Metro Station (serviced by the 104).

8. UMD Linguistics presents Mayfest 2015

Mayfest is a workshop that brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines and perspectives to discuss fundamental issues in linguistics. Over the course of the workshop, participants will engage in talks and discussions designed to foster conversation between UMD faculty, students, and visiting speakers.

The three central themes of this year's Mayfest are:
(i) What is morphology? How do we distinguish morphological processes from syntactic or phonological ones?
(ii) What is the trajectory for morphological learning in language acquisition?
(iii) What insight does morphology provide into language processing and production models?

14. Press Uncuffed: Raising Awareness About Global Press Freedom

Join us for World Press Freedom Day and support Press Uncuffed, a campaign raising awareness about the dire state of press freedom.

The last three years have been the worst on record for press freedom globally. In addition to the 221 imprisoned journalists, in 2014, 61 were killed and we've already lost 16 brave reporters in the first months of 2015.

Press Uncuffed was launched by journalism students of University of Maryland and their professor, two-time Pulitzer-prize winning Washington Post reporter Dana Priest to raise money to free imprisoned journalists around the world by selling bracelets bearing their names.
