The presence of the French in the Mashrek was not the consequence of the same circumstances that established it in Africa or the Maghreb. This no doubt explains why the stakes of literature in French are different in the Mashrek: at first the means by which the voices of the region could be heard at a crucial juncture in its political history, french is today the medium of expression of local identities even as it attains something of the universal. This is the result of a largely unconscious process of cultural synthesis that has little in common with French theories about the rhetoric of literary genes.
