Born in 1940, in Jiangxi Province, China, Gao Xingjian is the first Chinese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2000. He studied French in Beijing and translated Ionesco, Prévert, Michaux, Sarraute in Chinese. He has been living in France since 1988 and became a French citizen in 1998. He writes both in Chinese and French.
