Holidays and shopping are an important part of this month, but how can we be mindful of consumption and leave smaller footprints? Americans throw away 20 pounds of food per person each month, according to the NRDC. Food waste in landfills emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Instead of piling your plate, take smaller portions and go back for more helpings if you're hungry. For food that you simply can't eat, try composting instead of tossing it in the trash.
