Working to build an inclusive university community requires a campus citizenry that are dedicated to service on search committees. Discussions in a search often come down to a sense of whether a group of finalists will "fit" well within the existing organization. This is an opportunity to really stop and think about what we mean by "fit?" Are we talking about the needed skill set that the organization needs? Is this a way to consider potential personality conflicts? This question of "fit" has the potential to be unintentionally exclusive of people who are not from the dominant group. If this question comes up, really probe into what we mean by this word.
