Arboretum Talk: Meadow Fruiting Orchards

When: Wednesday, October 09, 2013 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Where: Eppley Recreation Center : south end of the Public Health Garden : outdoors
Event Type(s): Forum

As we work to include more edible plants on campus, we are excited to welcome R. David Myers to talk about how his research on Meadow Orchards in Maryland can be applied at UMCP. A Streuobstwiese, or meadow orchard, is a traditional rural community orchard with a variety of fruit trees planted in a common meadow or field. We are planning to replace the ornamental crabapples on the south side of Eppley with fruit trees this fall, so we will meet close by at the Public Health Garden to hear what types of trees show the most promise for fruit production, and pest and disease tolerance. Dave is a UM Extension Agent with the Southern Maryland Fruit Team, and an instructor with the IAA on campus.
