On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the University of Maryland will launch a new university calendar that will streamline and replace the FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD calendars. Beginning Sept. 8, you will be able to submit your events to the new campus calendar for review and approval, much like the current process for FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD. On Sept. 8, if you visit this website, you will automatically be redirected to the new calendar. In addition, a new weekly email called UMD This Week will launch on Sept. 8, replacing the daily FYI email. UMD This Week will be delivered at the beginning of every week and will highlight top upcoming events. Scaffolding Genomics Learning for Undergraduates by Susan Singer, Carleton College and NSF

Susan's career integrates science and education research. In this seminar, she will share her research and experience in reforming science teaching in the undergraduate level. At Carleton and Vassar, Susan and colleagues are integrating wet labs and in silico labs to scaffold student research experiences connected to climate change and the biology of the prairie plant Chamaecrista and the anemone Aiptasia, respectively. Whole transcriptome sequencing can provide undergraduates with large data sets forming a foundation for authentic research experiences in the context of a teaching lab. Susan will describe how they assess student learning outcomes using multiple assessment tools.
