Beyond the Classroom presents "The Island President"

When: Monday, April 15, 2013 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Where: 1102 South Campus Commons, Building 1
Event Type(s): Movie/Film/Video

The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced-the literal survival of his country! After bringing democracy to the Maldives, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives. The film captures Nasheed's first year of office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009, providing an insiders view to a top-level global assembly. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies, harnessing the power of media, and appealling for unity among developing nations. When hope fades, Nasheed makes a stirring speech which salvages an agreement.
"Inspiring... Offers not only a Mandela-like tale of political heroism but a much needed perspective on climate change." -- John DeFore, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
