On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the University of Maryland will launch a new university calendar that will streamline and replace the FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD calendars. Beginning Sept. 8, you will be able to submit your events to the new campus calendar for review and approval, much like the current process for FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD. On Sept. 8, if you visit this website, you will automatically be redirected to the new calendar. In addition, a new weekly email called UMD This Week will launch on Sept. 8, replacing the daily FYI email. UMD This Week will be delivered at the beginning of every week and will highlight top upcoming events. The email will include details on how to access the new calendar and how to submit events for approval. Questions? Email UMDevents@umd.edu.

CMNS and ADVANCE Present Dr. Barbara Larsen on "Mass Spectronomy to Support Industrial Biotechnology Processes"

When: Wednesday, December 05, 2012 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Where: Chemistry : Marker Seminar Room #0112
Event Type(s): Diversity

Mass spectrometry is a valuable technique to fully characterize the products of biotechnology. The technology is used to support the research development of these products to establishing the final product specifications.Discussed in this seminar is the development of the mass spectrometric tools to support the development of an industrial process in biotechnology. The work to support strain development including verification of product, methods to determine no endotoxins had been introduced, characterization of metabolites in fermentation broth, to support of the scale up will be discussed. The final products of biotechnology is then fully characterized using a host of mass spectrometry technologies from new ionization techniques such as atmospheric pressure ionization sources to in-source decay on MALDI TOF instrumentation to ion mobility techniques to identify architectural differences.
