Professor Richard Bell of the History Department will discuss his recent book "We Shall Be No More:
Suicide and Self-Government in the Newly United States."
"We Shall Be No More" examines the politics of self-destruction in America between the Revolution and the Civil War. It argues that while suicide is a quintessentially individual act, it nevertheless has unexpectedly broad social implications. It was perceived as a transgressive challenge to embodied authority, a portent of both danger and possibility.
Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing. Refreshments will be served. The event is free.
