Participants will discuss Dr. Capello's paper about the symbolic use of pyramids as 18th century survey artifacts, subsequently reinterpreted by 19th century Ecuadorians, scientists, and artists. The 1901-1906 French and Ecuadorian mission used pyramids to establish authenticity in the face of opposition from conservative Ecuadorian activists and indigenous communities, each of which opposed the geodetic measurements.
All are welcome. Direct your paper request and inquiries to Betsy Mendelsohn bmendel@umd.edu. Refreshments at 4pm.
