On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the University of Maryland will launch a new university calendar that will streamline and replace the FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD calendars. Beginning Sept. 8, you will be able to submit your events to the new campus calendar for review and approval, much like the current process for FYI and Free Stuff @ UMD. On Sept. 8, if you visit this website, you will automatically be redirected to the new calendar. In addition, a new weekly email called UMD This Week will launch on Sept. 8, replacing the daily FYI email. UMD This Week will be delivered at the beginning of every week and will highlight top upcoming events. The email will include details on how to access the new calendar and how to submit events for approval. Questions? Email UMDevents@umd.edu.

ADVANCE Program Seminar | "Tropical Forests, Agriculture, and Sparing Land for Nature"

When: Monday, May 14, 2012 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Where: LeFrak Hall, Room 1124
Event Type(s): Seminar

Featuring: Dr. Ruth DeFries, Denning Professor of Sustainable Development
Colombia University

Seminar Abstract:
Tropical forests are at the nexus of competing demands for agricultural commodities, biofuels, conservation, and carbon storage. As increasing appetites of growing populations rise, the demands on tropical forests will only increase further. Some have argued that intensifying agricultural production will spare land for nature by concentrating production on less land. Results based on satellite data of the Amazon and elsewhere indicate that intensification can spare land for nature but only with targeted policies to reduce deforestation. Dr. DeFries' research focus is examining human transformation of the landscape and its consequences for climate, biogeochemical cycling, biodiversity, and other ecosystem services that make our planet habitable.
