Emergency Alert

The University Community will be notified of emergencies via:

  • Text and e-mail messaging via alert.umd.edu
  • Early Warning Siren System
  • Alertus System

The University Community can gather additional emergency information at:

  • 88.1 WMUC
  • 1640 AM Radio
  • 301.405.SNOW
  • Campus Cable Channel 76

Register for Campus Emergency Alerts at www.alert.umd.edu or send a text message to 411911 with the subject as UMD.

The Early Warning Siren System is designed to alert persons outside of buildings to seek shelter and once in shelter to seek information on the nature of the emergency. The siren has one steady tone that will sound for a minimum of three minutes.

Evacuation

In some cases an evacuation of certain buildings or of the entire campus may be needed. If this is the case refer to your local building evacuation procedure or the campus evacuation plan located online at: www.umd.edu/emergencypreparedness/umeop/

Shelter-in-Place (for further information refer to shelter-in place procedure)

In some cases staying put in an office, residence hall room or other interior space is the best possible action. Having a small amount of food and water and other personal necessities may make sheltering-in-place a little more comfortable. Continue to check information resources to see when you can come out of shelter.
