Ms. Roberta Coates, Special Assistant to the President for Equity,
Conflict Resolution, and Training


Roberta Coates is an Assistant to President Mote at the University of Maryland and the Staff Ombudsperson who serves as consultant and mediator to the College Park campus staff.

Ms. Coates has held previous positions as Associate Director for Stamp Union and Campus Programs, Community Director for Resident Life, and Head Counselor for Intensive Education Program.

She received a B.A. in Social Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1971 and a Master¹s in Education in Counseling and Student Personnel at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland in 1974.

She has conducted numerous workshops across the United States in the areas of Conflict Resolution, Mediation, and Interpersonal Relationships. Ms. Coates is also a member of the TOA and UCOA National Association for ombudsperson.

Amongst her many contributions she has been awarded the following:
  • Associate Staff Member of the Year in 1998
  • The Woman of Color Awarded by the President's Commission on Women's Issues in 1992
  • Member of the Omicron Delta Honor Society in 1990
  • Outstanding Advisor of the Year for numerous student organizations in 1989
  • Roberta Coates Study Hall erected in her honor in 1986
